Can I package more than one patient inside the HHLA lab kit?
Yes. In fact, Multi-Packing is encouraged. You can package multiple patients (2-10 depending on number of tubes) into one Styrofoam box. You will need to make sure each specimen, requisition and insurance card is placed in a separate Biohazard Bag. Then package the kit as you would normally.
How do I get more Lab-in-a-Box® kits?
There are several ways to get more Lab-in-a-Box® kits:
- Call Customer Service (866-651-1251)
- Order on the HHLA website (www.hhla.com)
- Fax a request to Customer Service (866-634-9391)
- Request an automatic “standing order”
What days is HHLA open?
HHLA lab is in full operation Monday through Saturday.
Is HHLA open on weekends? Can I send specimens over the weekend?
Yes and No. HHLA is open on Saturdays (to receive and process specimens sent on Fridays). You should not ship on Saturdays (since HHLA is closed on Sundays) and you will be unable to ship on Sundays because pickup and drop off is unavailable.
What do I do if I need to have lab results STAT?
You will need to use a local or regional lab. There will be other times when this is also necessary (weekends and holidays when the overnight service may not pickup or deliver.)
Will HHLA notify me of abnormal test results?
HHLA will verbally notify the branch under the following circumstances:
- Results fall into alert ranges (See Alert Values).
- Results cannot be reported.
- Results are not in line with patient’s previous history.
What do we do when we have a late night draw?
It depends. Many analytes are stable for long periods of time. In those cases, you can wait and ship the specimen to HHLA the next day. In some cases, you will need to use a local lab.
If we send labs on Friday, when we will get the results?
Saturday.
What time will we get test results?
Most test results are completed by 1:00 p.m. your local time, although there are exceptions. You will need to check with Customer Service for specific answers.
What if I’m at the patient’s home and I don’t know the doctor’s fax number but do want the results faxed to the physician?
You or the patient will need to call the physician’s office to ascertain the fax number.
Are there tests that should never be sent to HHLA?
Yes. While HHLA can handle most of your testing needs, some tests must be processed immediately or require special handling. Some examples are:
- Blood Gases
- Ammonia
- PCR Testing
The best rule of thumb: If a test is not on the requisition form, call HHLA to confirm requirements.
Do you do cultures?
Yes. Call Customer Service for a list of available tests and supplies.
Can we get tourniquets in the kit?
Tourniquets are a part of our Veni-Pack, which can be purchased for a price of $2.95. This tourniquet is latex-free.
If I forget or can’t send the patient insurance card/information when I send HHLA the specimens, will you still do the tests?
Yes. HHLA will contact your agency or call the patient to secure the necessary information when a specimen is received with missing data. Not sending the data with the specimen means that HHLA may not be able to meet the next day turn around time commitment.
Do you accept Medicaid patients?
We accept Medicaid patients in states in which we are licensed as a Medicaid provider. Please call Customer Service to determine if we are a licensed Medicaid provider in your state.
